AlgoRave

An event featuring artists using algorithms to create music and visuals.

A one day conference and music festival showcasing a diverse range of artists using algorithmic tools and processes to show new technological advances. From live coding of visuals and music, to merging different genres, showcasing new technologies, and building bridges; this event celebrates technology, creativity, education, and inclusiveness.

The event will create a new frontier in music and art as DC hip-hop artists partner with selected live-coding artists, merging technology-driven music with street art while building a bridge to youth in the local community through fresh, engaging and socially relevant programming.

Live coding is a new and exciting movement in electronic music, where artists create and manipulate code during a performance that creates an ever-evolving world of unique sounds and visions, from the soothing to the provocative. Live coding spans genres and is accessible by design, heavily using free open-source software, and performers often project the code on screen so that audiences can view their craft at work.

Daytime talks will present speakers introducing and demonstrating their algorithmic art practices. Evening performances will be based upon the algorave format, in which the dancefloor is accompanied by a look behind the veil, with artists projecting a livestream of their code on screen. The event will also feature workshops creating an opportunity for anyone to learn and play with new technologies.

sPACYcLOUd, in DC’s Adams Morgan neighborhood, is a pioneer in the DC live coding scene, creating the first regular live-coding meetup bringing together live coders and local artists. The fertile cross-collaboration across genres and mediums created opportunities to create new art and music, learn new visual and musical technologies, and build bridges interconnecting the DC arts community.

Algorave is open to all ages--kids are encouraged to come and bring their laptops!
